B2B buying intent: separating evidence from inference

Intent is a conclusion, not an observation. This is how to build one honestly and present it so a rep can act on it.

What is buying intent?

Buying intent is an assessment of how likely a company is to enter a purchase process for a category soon. Unlike a buying signal, intent is never directly observed — it is inferred from signals, and it should always travel with the evidence it was inferred from.

The chain from evidence to intent

  1. Observation. A dated, attributable event or condition.
  2. Interpretation. What the event implies about need, budget or timing.
  3. Assessment. A combined view across several interpretations.
  4. Action. Sequence now, research further, or park.

Problems almost always come from collapsing steps one and three. When a system reports "high intent" without showing the observations, a rep cannot tell whether it means "announced a migration last week" or "somebody in the building read three articles".

Kinds of intent evidence

SourceAttributable to a named company? How to use it
First-party engagement (your site, docs, events)Often yesStrongest short-term timing input
Public company eventsYesBest basis for outreach relevance
Hiring and role dataYesDirection and stack evidence
Third-party research/intent feedsUsually probabilisticA weighted tie-breaker, validated against outcomes

Presenting intent responsibly

  • Label inference as inference in the interface, not only in documentation.
  • Show the underlying signals and their dates next to the conclusion.
  • State when evidence is thin instead of producing a confident narrative.
  • Let a low-evidence account score low rather than filling the gap with plausible language.

Frequently asked questions

What is buying intent in B2B?

Buying intent is an assessment of how likely a company is to enter a purchase process for a category in the near term. It is a conclusion drawn from evidence, not an observed fact in itself.

What is the difference between intent data and buying signals?

Buying signals are individual observable events. Intent data usually refers to aggregated, often anonymised research behaviour sold by a vendor. Both are inputs to an intent assessment; only the first is directly attributable.

Is third-party intent data reliable?

It varies by provider and category. Treat it as one weighted input whose provenance you can describe, not as a verified fact about a named company, and validate it against outcomes before weighting it heavily.

How should intent be presented to a sales rep?

As a labelled inference with the evidence attached, so the rep can judge it. An unexplained intent score encourages either blind trust or blanket dismissal.
